Graduating DDS class honored at awards ceremony

A DDS student receives an award from two faculty on stage

Graduating dental students gathered the night before their commencement ceremony to celebrate outstanding accomplishments in academics, leadership and service.

On Thursday, May 12, the Office of Student and Resident Affairs hosted the annual DDS Senior Awards Banquet, presenting 57 awards and honors to new graduates.

Dean Keith Mays addresses the crowd at the DDS senior awards ceremony

“This is a time to celebrate your hard work, and to honor and thank the faculty, staff and loved ones who helped you get here,” reflected Dean Keith Mays, DDS, MS, PhD in his opening remarks. “Enjoy every moment and soak it in.”

After receiving their awards, students honored two faculty members that would serve as hooders at the graduation ceremony: Natalie Peterson, DDS, and Lee Prohofsky, DDS. They also honored Prohofsky and Ernest Martin, DDS, as faculty of the year.

“We are lucky to have learned from such wise practitioners,” reflected Anna Becker, DDS ’22 and class vice president.

DDS Class President Tommy Chitwood took a moment to reflect on where the Class of 2022 has been, noting that it had been 1,345 days since their White Coat Ceremony.

Thomas Chitwood speaks on stage

“Now, we are back together, at the end of our 1,345 days. How have we changed? We’re a little older, hopefully a little wiser, but definitely more resilient. Resilient like an unbreaking tree in the wind. Resilient like the sand that is pummeled by a rolling tide. Resilient like a series of pontics on a 6 unit bridge. If you have successfully made it through these past four years, my friends, you can make it through anything.”

Congratulations to the winners of the 2022 DDS Senior Awards, and the entire DDS Class of 2022!
