Supporting Faculty Success at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry

The Office of Faculty Development strengthens the professional growth, academic vitality and long‑term success of faculty across the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. In alignment with the school’s mission to advance health through education, discovery and service, our office fosters a supportive environment where faculty can excel as educators, clinicians, scholars, and leaders. We are also committed to enhancing a strong sense of belonging for all faculty—regardless of rank, track, position or department—because feeling valued and connected enables colleagues to grow, contribute and achieve at a level that is both fulfilling and sustainable for their academic careers. We provide a coordinated, School‑wide approach to faculty development that supports colleagues at every stage of their careers. Our work includes:

We guide faculty in strengthening their teaching, clinical practice, research engagement and academic career planning. This includes individualized consultation on promotion pathways, academic expectations and long‑term professional goals.

Mentorship & Peer Support

We oversee the School’s mentoring program and peer observation of teaching, ensuring faculty have access to constructive feedback, collegial support and opportunities to learn from one another.

Faculty Onboarding

Our office collaborates with Academic Affairs and Human Resources to welcome new faculty and support their transition into the School community. Each new full‑time faculty member receives an academic career plan and is paired with a faculty mentor.

Recognition & Awards Support

We actively support faculty in pursuing institutional and external recognitions, awards and honors. This includes identifying opportunities, coordinating nominations and assisting with application materials. Celebrating faculty achievements is an essential part of fostering a culture where colleagues feel valued, supported and encouraged to reach their full potential.

Faculty Development Programming

We design and deliver faculty development programs featuring internal and external experts. These sessions address emerging topics in teaching, scholarship, leadership and clinical practice, with opportunities for continuing education credit.
