Gia Fisher, DDS ’24, noticed something special about the University of Minnesota when she first visited. “The students seemed the happiest here,” she recalled. “They loved their clinical experience and how they could collaborate with specialty programs.”
That joy inspired Fisher—and she has experienced that same joy herself as a learner. “My favorite part of the School of Dentistry is how cohesive my class is,” she said. “We help each other out, and are very collaborative.”
In addition to the community she has found with her classmates, Fisher has become part of several communities by serving underserved populations.
“I am passionate about working in community clinics and treating underserved populations,” she explained.
“The School of Dentistry is ripe with volunteer opportunities to help populations in need. I have had the opportunity to improve my clinical skills by going on Outreach at a community clinic.”
That passion has inspired Fisher to pursue a position that prioritizes underserved populations, including medically compromised patients and those in care deserts. Fisher has loved her experiences in clinic, on Outreach and volunteering in the community.
But most of all, Fisher loves the community she has found here. “Students and faculty work as a team, and we all learn from each other,” she said. “It is one of the best learning environments I have ever been in.”
