Memorial Scholarships

The University of Minnesota offers several Memorial Scholarships for DDS and DH students which rely on generous donations from alumni and the public. Each scholarship has its own purpose and criteria, and the award amount may vary from year to year.

DANIEL ALEXANDER ALLMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Fund 23663, created September 11, 2020

This scholarship for Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) students was created in memory of Daniel Allman, DDS. Dr. Allman, a 2018 School of Dentistry graduate, who passed away in September 2020.

STACIE KVAM CARLSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Fund 21768, created January 4, 2017

This scholarship will go to a student enrolled in the School of Dentistry dental hygiene program who values education, community service and student engagement. A preference will be given to students engaged with the American Dental Hygiene Association.

MARIKA MIDDAG STONE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Fund 22284, created January 10, 2018

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support for fourth-year Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) students. Prospective students will demonstrate academic and clinical excellence, will be active in the community, dedicated to the learning process and will show leadership among their peers. Preference will be given to students from rural communities and/or are outdoor enthusiasts to honor the roots and interests of Dr. Marika Stone.

JOHN RICHARD ISAACSON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is for Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) students from Minnesota, South Dakota, or North Dakota. The scholarship is designed for half to be awarded to an incoming DDS student and the other half given to a student currently enrolled in the DDS program.

BRET LANDIS BETTERMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is for students entering their final year of the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) program. The recipient of this award intends to pursue advanced dental education following graduation and exhibits both academic and clinical excellence. Additionally, the recipient will be active in the community, dedicated to the learning process and demonstrates leadership among their peers. Preference will be given to someone who is environmentally conscientious and an outdoor enthusiast. The awardee will be a well-rounded human being who cares deeply about the world, its people and its sustainability. 

DR. TOM GRAMS MEMORIAL AWARD

This scholarship provides awards to second-, third-, or fourth-year Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) students who have demonstrated exceptional volunteerism or skill as well as an interest in providing treatment to underserved patients.

 

DR. T.H. DEDOLPH, JR. SCHOLARSHIP

Fund 1628, created April 16, 2007

This scholarship is intended for students either enrolled in the oral and maxillofacial surgery certificate or graduate program or for Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) students interested in pursuing oral and maxillofacial surgery. Eligible recipients of this award will be students enrolled in the DDS program who have conducted research in conjunction with or relevant to the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, students enrolled in the DDS program who have demonstrated an interest and capabilities to practice oral and maxillofacial surgery or residents in the oral and maxillofacial program.

ROGER J. FREDSALL MEMORIAL FUND

Fund 5268, created April 12, 2000

The fund is intended to support a second-year dental student in the Psi Omega dental fraternity.

DR. WILLIAM F. BRAASCH ENDOWED MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Fund 2774, created March 27, 1989

This scholarship will help support students throughout their dental education. The fund will be divided into three equal parts and awarded to one first-year, one second-year, and one third-year student.

CLAYTON SWANSON SR. MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT

Fund 3028, created January 14, 1991

This endowment will be used to give a cash reward to a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) student who has shown outstanding performance in prosthodontics. 

THE GORDON AND MARIE HACKBORN DENTAL HYGIENE SCHOLARSHIP

Fund 4850, created May 21, 1999

The scholarship is intended for full-time undergraduate students with financial need enrolled in the dental hygiene program. Recipients will carry an average to above-average grade point average.
