If Mariah Johnson, DDS ’24, had to pick one word to describe her dental school journey so far, it would be “full.”
Johnson has taken advantage of as many opportunities as she could at the School of Dentistry—from sports to volunteering to organized dentistry. “There are so many clubs and activities that are available to us as dental students, and I have had the opportunity to be part of several,” she said.
Johnson’s involvement has included memberships in the American Dental Association, American Student Dental Association, and Student Academy of General Dentistry, helping to take impressions for University of Minnesota football players’ mouthguards, participating in a research study about dental ergonomics and more.
“These activities have taught me so much, enhanced my education, helped connect me with my community and peers, and made dental school exciting and fun,” she said.
But what Johnson has loved most of all has been the opportunity to give back to surrounding communities, providing dental care to underserved populations. “It is so rewarding to use the skills I have acquired in school to help those in my community,” she said.
As she looks toward the future, Johnson is not sure which direction her career will take her —but she knows that the experiences she has had at the School of Dentistry have prepared her well.
“The School of Dentistry has provided me with the skills to be a great dentist and the connections to find job opportunities,” she said. “I am excited to see where my dental and life journey takes me next.”
