Massimo Costalonga, PhD, DMD, is a Periodontology and Oral Biology professor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. His NIH research team studies the contribution of mucosal intraepithelial Langerhans cells and subepithelial dendritic cells to the development of the T cell-mediated adaptive immune response.
Meet Our Keynote Presenters
Maurizio Tonetti, PhD, DDS, MS, serves as a Chair and Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine – China. Previously, Prof Tonetti was a professor and head of the department of Periodontology at the School of Dental Medicine of the University of Connecticut. He also served as professor and head of the Department of Periodontology at the University College in London, the University of Berne, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. He is currently the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. His recent research focuses on three areas: improved understanding of periodontal infections and their general health consequences; regeneration and bio-engineering of lost periodontal structures; and replacement of irretrievable teeth with dental implants. The research of his team spans from fundamental discovery to clinical translation. Dr. Tonetti is widely recognized for his contributions to improved periodontal diagnosis and risk assessment, control of periodontitis, practicing periodontal regeneration, and design and execution of large clinical trials in periodontology and implant dentistry. His scientific work has been cited 20,000 times and has an H-factor of 79. He has been engaged worldwide in the planning and delivery of advanced educational programs in the fields of periodontology and implant dentistry.
Mario Aimetti, MD, DDS, MS, obtained his degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1987, specialized in Dentistry in 1990, and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1995. Since 2007 he has been the Director of the Master in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry and the Head of the Department of Periodontology Dental School at the University of Turin. In 2017 he became the Chair of the accredited EFP Postgraduate Program in Turin. Dr. Aimetti is Past President of the Italian Society of Periodontology (SldP) and President of the SldP Foundation. He is the author of more than 130 articles published in international journals, is the co-editor of several international books in the field of periodontology, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Aimetti is a worldwide speaker.
Meet Our Presenters
Giacomo Baima, DDS, MS, PhD Candidate, graduated summa cum laude with a Doctor in Dentistry degree in 2016 at the University of Turin in Italy. He obtained a Master of Science degree in periodontology at the Complutense University of Madrid under the mentorship of Prof. Mariano Sanz. While in Madrid, Dr. Baima pursued a certificate in "Animal and Human Cell Culture for Regenerative Medicine." In 2017, he also had a research internship in the lab of Prof. William Giannobile at the University of Michigan. Back in Turin, he went through post-graduate training under the mentorship of Prof. Aimetti to obtain the European Federation of Periodontology board certification in 2022. Currently, he is a PhD Candidate in 'Bioengineering and Surgical Sciences' and a research fellow at the Section of Periodontology at the University of Turin, with a full-time involvement in clinical and basic research in periodontology and peri-implant diseases. He has also authored several articles in international peer-reviewed journals and is a member of the EFP Alumni board.
Robert Durand, DDS, MS, obtained his DMD degree from the Université de Montréal Faculty of Dental Medicine in 2002. Thereafter, he obtained an Advanced Education in General Dentistry certificate at the University of Rochester – Eastman Institute for Oral Health in 2003 and a specialty certificate in periodontics combined with an M.Sc. degree from the University of Minnesota in 2006. Dr. Durand is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Dr. Durand is a Professor of Periodontics and Chair of the Department of Oral Health at the Université de Montréal Faculty of Dental Medicine. He has taught and supervised undergraduate and graduate students in periodontology and implantology since 2008. His principal research interests include implantology, periodontal regeneration, and dental education. He is also a clinical supervisor and researcher at the Oral and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics Department at the Université de Montréal's medical center (CHUM). He maintains a private practice limited to periodontics and implantology in downtown Montreal.
Shang-Chen "Grace" Chiu, DDS, MS, completed her dental education at the Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan and her Master of Science in periodontology at the University of Minnesota. She serves as a practicing provider at the Beethoven Orthodontic Center and as a lecturer and leader of the Newton Implant Forum in Taiwan. Dr. Chiu is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and received the Outstanding Educator Award from the American Board of Periodontology. Her clinical specialties and experiences focus on multidisciplinary treatments for periodontal and orthodontic combined approaches as well as implants in the esthetic zone.
Jason Naud, DDS, MS, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and grew up in a small waterfront town, Port Orchard, WA. He graduated with a DDS degree from the University of Washington and completed a residency in Periodontics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN before settling in Duluth to open his Periodontal Practice. Dr. Naud is currently Board Certified in Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery. He lectures nationally on Gingival Recession, Implant Surgery and Restoration Planning, Implant Complications and Management, and Periodontal Therapy. He has published in peer reviewed scientific journals and is an advisory consultant for surgical material development.
Thomas Nguyen, DMD, MSc FRCD(C), is the Associate Director of the Division of Periodontics at the McGill Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences. He was previously the Interim Director of Predoctoral Periodontology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Nguyen received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Montreal. He subsequently completed an AEGD residency from the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, an MSc at McGill University, and his training in Periodontology at the University of Minnesota. He is a board-certified specialist in periodontology and implant surgery. Dr. Nguyen is both a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
Vivek Thumbigere Math, BDS, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He completed his Certificate in Periodontology and PhD in Oral Biology from the University of Minnesota. He also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship with the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
