Biography

Dr. Boyen Huang is Professor and Assistant Dean for Faculty Development at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan (1994), a Master of Health Administration (MHA) from Chang Gung University, Taiwan (2000), and a PhD from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, United Kingdom (2004).

He held research, teaching and leadership appointments at institutions in Australia, Japan and Taiwan, and served in executive and committee roles with the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). Dr. Huang is dedicated to mentoring early career faculty and postdoctoral researchers and has supervised numerous graduate and undergraduate research projects. He is known for fostering collaborative initiatives spanning faculty development, scientific research, student mobility, resource integration and international research partnerships.

At the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, he oversees new faculty orientation, coordinates mentorship programs and peer observations of teaching, and leads a range of faculty development initiatives. He also advises and supports faculty through tenure and academic promotion processes.
 

Research Summary

Dr. Huang’s research focuses on advancing telehealth technologies and practice models, building on earlier investigations of biological and socio‑behavioral risk factors for oral disease. His prior work has examined dental and craniofacial anomalies, traumatic dental injuries and non‑nutritive sucking behaviors. He is currently developing an AI‑enabled teledentistry practice model to strengthen clinical decision‑making and provide online patient support, reflecting his commitment to innovating how dental care is delivered.

Teaching Summary

Dr. Huang brings extensive experience and enthusiasm to teaching across dental public health, pediatric dentistry, general dentistry, dental therapy and research methods in health sciences. He integrates clinical and public‑health perspectives to equip students to provide comprehensive, patient‑centered dental care.

He emphasizes translating research findings into teaching and service, fostering understanding, respect, and critical thinking, and cultivating students’ research and professional skills to prepare the next generation of dental professionals.
