Boyen Huang, DDS, MHA, PhD

Dr. Boyen Huang assumed his role as an associate professor with tenure at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 2020. Before joining the U, he held various executive, research, and teaching positions at institutions such as Charles Sturt University, James Cook University, Kyoto University, and the University of Western Australia. Dr. Huang's contributions extend beyond academia, as he has actively participated in executive and committee roles for the International Association for Dental Research (IADR).

Throughout his career, Dr. Huang has been dedicated to mentoring early career academics and postdoctoral researchers, overseeing numerous graduate and undergraduate research projects. His expertise is sought after, leading him to be invited to review oral health strategies for state governments and evaluate grant applications for various federal, state, and professional funding bodies. His commitment to collaboration is evident in his leadership of numerous projects encompassing faculty development, scientific research, student mobility, and resource integration and sharing, involving colleagues and institutions globally.
Starting in January 2024, Dr. Huang has taken on the role of Assistant Dean for Faculty Development at the School of Dentistry. In this capacity, he directs new faculty orientation, mentorship programs, peer observations of teaching, and faculty development initiatives. Additionally, he plays a crucial role in providing support for faculty tenure and academic promotion.

Dr. Huang's research encompasses the investigation of biological and sociobehavioral risk factors linked to oral conditions, such as dental and craniofacial anomalies, as well as traumatic dental injuries. His recent work also delves into the emerging field of teledentistry. Leading an international and interprofessional team, Dr. Huang is driving a mobile health (mHealth) research project focused on remotely assessing traumatic dental injuries using smartphone-acquired photos.

His pioneering efforts extend to the development of an artificial intelligence-empowered mHealth practice model, which shows promise in advancing clinical decision-making and the implementation of online emergency support systems. These forward-thinking initiatives underscore Dr. Huang's commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and enhancing dental care methodologies.

Dr. Huang is experienced in and passionate for teaching dental public health, pediatric dentistry, general dentistry, dental therapy, and research methods in health sciences. He particularly values (1) the translation of research outcomes into teaching and service, in addition to (2) the nourishment of understanding, respect and critical thinking, and (3) buildups of research/professional capabilities for the future generation.
