Date Effective

September 1, 2021

Policy Owner: Chief Development Officer

POLICY STATEMENT

All named spaces within the School of Dentistry (on-campus and off-campus locations) must include a philanthropic component.

REASON FOR POLICY

Separate building areas that are not significant University assets may be named in honor of an individual or a non-University entity. An independent committee of the relevant academic or administrative leadership and building occupants shall manage and approve these namings (Subd 5 Board of Regents Policy Namings). This policy is the managing document for the School of Dentistry.

PROCEDURES

Staff should submit an online request for fundraising support. All requests are reviewed by the Development Office and the Dean.

The School of Dentistry is required to follow the Board of Regents Naming Policy. The University Naming Committee will review the naming of significant university assets and assist in determining fundraising goals for that asset. Examples of “significant University assets”: include the naming of Colleges/Schools, U-level academic programs, centers and institutes; named positions (lectureships, fellowships, professorships, chairs); and buildings, significant portions of buildings, grounds, physical structures, streets and areas.

If it is determined by the University Naming Committee that the space is not a significant University asset, then the proposed named space and philanthropic goal must be reviewed and approved by the Dean.

When a capital campaign is launched to build a new, or renovate the School of Dentistry, naming opportunities will be defined in consultation with University policy. Not all currently named spaces are tied to philanthropy, therefore pre-existing named spaces will be reviewed and a committee comprised of faculty, the Chief Development Officer, and leadership will determine which ones will be exempted.

Prior to a renovation or new building, if there are pre-existing named spaces that do not have a philanthropic component, the Dean, Division Director or Department Chair can together determine if renovation of the space is needed and then request fundraising support which will trigger the naming process. Naming of Separate Building Parts Policy Policy # Date Adopted: 9/1/2021 Date Amended: Naming opportunities are intended to honor both the University and the donor. Although the name given to a facility will often continue to be used for the life of the facility, naming recognition in some circumstances may be limited to a stated term, and also may be revisited or revoked in circumstances where it is no longer deemed to be in the best interest of the University, School and/or the donor. All naming agreements should clearly indicate that the naming will be limited to the asset’s useful life and that the gift may be revoked at the discretion of the University or Board of Regents for cause. Revocation for cause is outlined by the University of Minnesota Naming Terms, Limitations and Changes policy.
