Biography

Flavin graduated from the University of Minnesota with her Bachelor of
Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH), and restorative functions (RF) certification. She practiced clinically in a metropolitan general dentist’s office for several years before deciding to pursue dental hygiene education at the University of Minnesota. She joined the University of Minnesota's Division of Periodontology in 2019 as a pre-clinical periodontology instructor for first-year dental students, and was offered a faculty position within the Division of Dental Hygiene in 2020, shortly before graduating with her Master of Science in Dental Hygiene (MSDH) in the Spring of 2021. 

Flavin currently serves as a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor in interprofessional, clinical and didactic courses including: Cariology and Applied Nutrition, Research Methods in Allied Dental Health, and Periodontology. In addition to her didactic and clinical teaching responsibilities, Keeley serves as one of two hospital dental hygienists at MHealth Fairview Medical Center, and leads students on interprofessional rounds. She also serves as the clinic director for senior dental hygiene and dental therapy students.

Her professional memberships include the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA), the National Dental Practice- Based Research Network (NDPBRN).

Title: Hospital Dental Hygiene Consult Service

Funding: $225,000
Secondary investigator, serves as the hospital dental hygienist directly involved in implementation and research interventions at the hospital. The goal of this grant is to fund a full-time dental hygiene position at the hospital with the goals of 1) educating medical and nursing staff, 2) direct patient care by performing oral assessments, triaging urgent oral/dental needs to community dentists, and developing individualized oral care plans, 3) precepting dental hygiene, dental therapy, and medical students on collaborative practice.

Title: The impact of a dental hygiene service line on hospitalized patients’ oral health and general health outcomes

Co-wrote application, secondary investigator. The goal of this funding serves to extend a pilot study of a hospital dental hygiene consult service started in September 2020, and to serve as a bridge for a larger grant anticipated in Spring of 2022. The impact of this grant will allow more patients to receive oral assessments from the dental hygiene consult service, providing additional, valuable data to inform phase 2 research.
