Porter to become Interim Assistant Dean for Student and Resident Affairs

Mercedes Porter, DDS, MA, becomes the Interim Assistant Dean for Student and Resident Affairs effective today, March 6, 2023. The transition was announced to faculty, staff and students in an email on February 23rd.

Porter takes on the role after Sara Johnson, MA, submitted her resignation to pursue other opportunities at the university.

“Sara has exceptionally led the Office of Student and Resident Affairs since 2008,” said Karl Self, DDS, MBA, Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in an email to faculty, staff and students. “Her leadership in this office has positively shaped, supported and impacted student success throughout her tenure. Her work and contributions are truly appreciated.”

Porter takes on the interim position after twelve years of working at the School of Dentistry. Porter graduated with her DDS from the University of Minnesota in 2009 and completed a General Practice Residency at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, followed by a Master of Arts in dental education from the University of the Pacific. She joined the School of Dentistry faculty in 2011 and has since received multiple faculty of the year awards and assumed additional responsibilities, including her current role as the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs.
