Pursuing research and practice with a dual degree

When it came time to decide on a post-graduate path, Parandis Kazemi didn’t want to have to choose between her two passions. The School of Dentistry allowed her to keep her options open, pursuing both research and practice, thanks to a dual degree program.

One of the proudest moments an educator experiences is seeing their students succeed. Earlier in my career, I had a mentee who would drop in and camp out with endless questions on their mind. Although it momentarily interrupted my work, I didn’t mind. I was fortunate to have mentors in my past who allowed me to do the same thing long ago. Fast forward, and I was amazed to see the mentee grow as they presented at a national meeting.

A joint event between the Women’s Dental Association and School of Dentistry Alumni Relations connected alumni and soon-to-be-graduates to discuss work, life and being a woman in dentistry. On Tuesday, April 5, alumni Lisa Young, DDS ’98, and Sarah Heuer, DDS ’94, shared their career journeys and their perspectives on issues facing current graduates.

Uppgaard shares responsible opioid strategies at ADEA

Rachel Uppgaard, DDS, clinical associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, shared that work with fellow educators at the American Dental Education Association’s annual meeting in Philadelphia. As part of a presentation and panel, Uppgaard joined seven other dental educators to share what their schools are doing to foster a healthier relationship with pain management.
