Bio

James Q. Swift, DDS, is Professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He is a graduate of Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA, the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and completed a General Practice Residency at Oklahoma Children’s Memorial Hospital. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency training program at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

He began his academic career as an assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, in the College of Dentistry. He had teaching responsibilities with the dental students and the oral and maxillofacial surgery residents. He served on two cleft palate/craniofacial teams.

In 1989, Dr. Swift became Director of the Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He later became the Director of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2005 he was promoted to Professor.

Dr. Swift is a former President of the American Dental Education Association and as well as former President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Swift received an RO1 award from the National Institute of Dental Research to study inflammatory mediators and pain and concentrated his area of research in pain and pain management. He also performed clinical research in the area of temporomandibular disorders and inflammatory mediators of the temporomandibular joint space. He has acted as principal investigator on implant research which included pre-market approval studies for a number of implant systems as well as basic science research on implants.

In 1997, Dr. Swift was named as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and in 2002 was named as a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. In 1999, he and his colleagues received the Daniel M. Laskin Award for the most outstanding article published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for 1998. In 2002 he was named the Century Club Outstanding Professor for the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He was honored by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation with its Ambassador Service Award in 2004. In 2009 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Dental Education Association.

Dr. Swift practices full scope oral and maxillofacial surgery in the Twin Cities area.
