Predoctoral fellowships are generally awarded to students who have passed their preliminary exams.
Predoctoral fellowships provide a stipend, course and registration fees, health insurance (including family coverage), and research-related supply and travel funds. The annual stipend for predoctoral individuals will remain fixed for the period of support, unless the stipend level is changed in the NIH annual appropriation. The NIH Grants Policy Statement is the final authority on the terms and conditions of stipends.
One predoctoral fellowship is immediately available; start date may be negotiable. This fellowship is restricted to applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of application. Contact us for more information.
Requirements and milestones
Predoctoral fellows who have passed their preliminary exams spend the bulk of their time conducting research in their mentors’ labs. Predoctoral fellows who have not yet passed the preliminary exams spend an equal amount of time on coursework and research.
The MinnCResT Program’s mission is to train the next generation of independent investigators exploring questions in craniofacial, dental, and oral health research. All trainees, regardless of research focus, are required to pursue coursework and professional development activities that will meet the program’s mission.
Predoctoral fellows are expected to:
- Attend monthly MinnCResT seminars;
- Show timely progress toward completion of degree as determined by home department;
- Submit updated CV with annual activity report, which addresses progress towards benchmarks;
- Publish at least one first-authored paper and have one in press before degree completion;
- Present research at a national/international conference in each of the last two years of MinnCResT Program support;
- Present research at an AADR or IADR meeting or NIDCR T32 fellows’ poster session at least once during fellowship;
- For DDS/PhD students, draft an NIH F series research proposal during the first fellowship year for submission in the second fellowship year;
- For non DDS/PhD students, minor in Oral Biology (12 credits required);
- In the year preceding degree completion, apply and interview for postdoctoral position or other career-track advancement;
- Obtain postdoctoral position or other career-track advancement by the end of degree program.

- Cover Letter. Be sure to address how your research will support the MinnCResT Program's mission.
- Your Statement of goals (1 to 2 pages)
- CV or Resume
- Identify a question of considerable interest in contemporary science. Propose an experiment or several experiments that could answer that question (1 to 2 pages)
- Three letters of recommendation (sent directly from the evaluators)
Transcripts from all universities/colleges attended. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable with the application; official transcripts will be required at the time of award. NOTE: If you plan to submit a University of Minnesota transcript, please contact us. We can save you the cost of an official transcript.
