Stephen Shuman, DDS, MS, FGSA, was inducted into the International College of Dentists as a 2024 fellow.

Shuman is a professor and director of the Division of Hospital and Special Care Dentistry and director of the Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program at the School of Dentistry.

He received his DDS from Temple University before completing his Fellowship and Master of Science in Geriatric Dentistry from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He has been part of the school’s faculty since 1989.

Shuman is passionately dedicated to care for older adults and populations that have needs that can limit their ability to receive routine oral health care. He serves on the faculty for the University’s Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Expansion Program and is Chair of the Oral Health Workgroup for the Gerontological Society of America as well as Chair of the Minnesota Dental Association’s Barrier to Care Committee. He was honored as School of Dentistry Professor of the Year in 2016 and was the eighth dental professional to be inducted as a Fellow in the Gerontological Society of America, the nation’s oldest and largest organization of professionals working in the fields of aging research, education, policy and practice.

Shuman was inducted into the ICD “for conspicuous service rendered in the art and science of dentistry,” according to the college.

The International College of Dentists honors dentists who support humanitarian and educational initiatives and advocate for oral health across the world. Fellows exemplify excellence in professional achievement, service and dedication to the field.

“Dr. Shuman exemplifies the ICD’s core values of integrity, leadership and service,” the ICD shared in a press release. He was inducted during the college’s 90th Annual Convocation, with a virtual ceremony.

“Fellowship in the International College of Dentists stimulates thinking of what is needed to be accomplished to help those individuals in our communities, here in the United States, and in other countries, deserving of our care,” shared Ira Titunik, DDS, president of the USA Section of the International College of Dentists, in a letter to new fellows. “Fellowship is a recognition of what one has done. Who one is. What you become is up to you.”

Shuman was honored and grateful to be inducted to the college.

"It’s an honor to be recognized by such a distinguished organization as the International College of Dentists and especially by professional colleagues who nominated me,” he reflected “I am grateful to the college for this honor and my colleagues for their support. This award serves as a reminder of our shared commitment to excellence in dentistry and patient care and I am truly thankful for the opportunity to be part of such a distinguished community."
