Orientation brings incoming clinical learners together for connection and learning
Members of the DDS Class of 2028, Dental Therapy Class of 2027 and Dental Hygiene Class of 2026 came together for orientation on August 7 and 8.
Incoming clinical learners gathered for two days of learning, teambuilding and sharing in community as they prepare to start their classes in the coming weeks.
“We are so excited that you're here,” shared Mercedes Porter, DDS, Assistant Dean for Student and Resident Affairs in her opening remarks. “I can’t wait to see how all your unique experiences come together to create the personality of your class.”
She encouraged new learners, preparing them for the path ahead. “There is no doubt that dental school will be demanding,” she said. “But it will also be rewarding. You will learn skills you have never before considered. You will become experts in new concepts, and you will create lifelong friendships.”
Paul Jardine, BSc, DUT, PhD, Interim Director of Admissions, shared details about the incoming classes. “I want to share a little bit about who you are to us,” he explained.
“You are here because we know you will be successful,” Jardine shared, referencing the process of reviewing more than 1,400 applications. “You bring a commitment to academic excellence and service, a high potential to work as a team and an ability to plan an active role in the development of your profession. I am confident that you will do well, becoming trusted providers.”
Incoming learners heard from the Disability Resources Center, the registrar and members of the Student and Resident Affairs team on academic success. They then enjoyed an involvement fair, which showcased the available student groups and opportunities for extracurricular activities, before enjoying lunch with current students and faculty.
Students received a tour of the spaces they will use most in the Health Sciences Education Center and Moos Tower from members of the upper class and learned about what they can expect in their first year.
On the second day of orientation, students learned additional details about what to expect during their first year of school, including mental health resources, policies and the school’s code of conduct.
Students received information about their class code of ethics, which each individual class will write, present and sign as part of their White Coat Ceremony in a commitment to themselves and to one another.
Finally, incoming learners enjoyed teambuilding activities that stretched their minds and encouraged them to work together in new and exciting ways. Embracing the power of play, learners participated in games that helped them get to know one another and break the ice.
Members of each class will begin their studies in the coming weeks as they embark on their professional journeys as future oral health care providers. We welcome them to the school and to the profession!
