ASDA leadership roles challenge learners to think outside the classroom
Learners from the School of Dentistry are embracing leadership opportunities with the American Student Dental Association.
The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) “is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests and welfare of dental students,” according to its website.
Four students have assumed positions on the cabinet for ASDA’s District 8, which includes six dental schools in the midwest. Bill Keute, DDS ’26, will serve as one of two directors of chapter development, supporting and working with each chapter’s committees. Tobiasz Marchewka, DDS ’27, will serve as one of two community outreach chairs. Jennifer Liu, DDS ’26, is one of two speaker chairs, aiding in the identification and support of speakers for district events. Michael Bylander, DDS ’26, joins the presidential council as the University of Minnesota ASDA president.
We spoke with three of these new leaders to learn more about their involvement in ASDA and what they’re looking forward to in their new roles.

Why did you decide to get involved with ASDA leadership?
My journey with ASDA began after attending the National Leadership Conference as a D1. Initially, I applied as a hesitant D1, uncertain of what awaited me. However, upon arriving in Chicago, I encountered an extraordinary community of like-minded individuals who shared a passion for supporting and advancing our profession, all while enjoying having fun. It was at that moment that I realized: I have to get involved with ASDA.
What are you looking forward to in the new role?
As the newly-appointed president, I am thrilled to inspire the next generation of D1 students who may not yet grasp the significance of ASDA. My focus will be at the chapter level, where I intend to curate a diverse array of events. These gatherings will vividly demonstrate the advantages of becoming active members in their local ASDA chapters.
How will participating in ASDA make you a better student and a better dentist?
Since joining ASDA, countless doors have opened for me. The network of individuals within my school has been instrumental in guiding me through classes, enhancing my skills as a student. Additionally, attending continuing education events at the chapter level has provided valuable insights into what to expect and how to prepare for my future career as a dentist.

Why did you decide to get involved with ASDA leadership?
Being elected last year into the executive council and stepping into my role as Vice President of ASDA Minnesota this year, I have had the opportunity to learn more about ASDA this past year. After attending some of the conferences, like the National Leadership Conference and Annual Session, I found that I had a lot of the same concerns as other individuals. I decided it would be great to have more district involvement from our own chapter, and bring Minnesota into our district more prominently, so I decided to run. Meeting people from different chapters and getting a different experience with organizing and working with other students will allow me to bring that excitement back to Minnesota.
What are you looking forward to in the new role?
I’m excited to work with students from other schools. One project we’re working on is a district-wide initiative where we work with each chapter and have different variations depending on the state and chapter we’re in. It’s exciting to use what we have here in Minnesota and also get some help in planning big events with other schools.
How will participating in ASDA make you a better student and a better dentist?
ASDA has so many external leadership and networking opportunities that are unique compared to other clubs, especially outside the classroom. I’ve been able to meet so many different people from our district and national conferences, and work with our state chapter and our district chapter. That’s helped me gain a lot of experience and meet mentors who I can reach out to, those who have different views on clinical practice as well!

Why did you decide to get involved with ASDA leadership?
I decided to get involved with ASDA for the professional and social aspects of the organization. On the professional level, it’s a wonderful opportunity. This group has been doing great things focused on community service and outreach, as well as providing great pre-dental opportunities. It’s an organization that allows you to do so much more, and provides opportunities that you as an individual may not have access to. On the social side, I decided to apply for a role in District 8 because it allows me to meet people from other schools and work with people who have different perspectives. I enjoy hearing how other people think and learning about what influences them, how they make their decisions. Through this opportunity, I am able to develop better relationships with dental students from other dental schools than if I had just attended the conference.
What are you looking forward to in the new role?
Honestly, I’m excited to make new friends as well as to develop better connections with dental professionals in our field. I hope to establish good relationships with mentors in our field, including role models who I’ve looked up to. I’m also excited to provide my community with the opportunity to get to know these amazing people and share what they have accomplished. I want to invite speakers to our events that help our community grow as both individuals and providers.
How will participating in ASDA make you a better student and a better dentist?
Being involved in ASDA makes you approach situations differently than just being a student does. You’re constantly being exposed to new experiences and new perspectives. Additionally, you are guided to think about how your actions affect the community as a whole. For example, when I’m thinking about potential speakers to invite, I not only need to consider what topic would appeal to the general population, but also need to consider other areas that have previously been overlooked that are necessary for us to be well-rounded providers. Additionally, we need to consider how to make sure everyone gets to experience a little bit of what they want to hear. Through ASDA, you’re constantly being challenged to think outside the box, to grow and develop. My experience has made me a better, more well-rounded person, and that’s not always something you get just in the classroom!
Tobiasz Marchewka, DDS ’27
Community Outreach Chair
Why did you decide to get involved with ASDA leadership?
When I began my journey in dental school, I was excited to become actively involved in an
organization that aligned with my interests. Attending the National Leadership Conference in Chicago was a realization moment for me, as it showcased the incredible sense of community within ASDA. The opportunity to connect with dental students from across the country and participate in educational sessions on topics not typically covered in the dental school curriculum, such as owning a private practice, inspired me.
This experience inspired me to pursue a leadership role within ASDA. I am driven to contribute to the organization's growth and make a meaningful impact. By collaborating with fellow dental students from various universities, I aim to organize local events and fundraisers and explore ways for us to make a difference in our communities collectively.
My passion for ASDA stems from the belief that working together can enhance our educational experiences and develop valuable leadership skills.
What are you looking forward to in the new role?
As the community outreach chair, I am thrilled about the opportunity to organize initiatives that allow dental students to make a positive impact in our community. This role aligns perfectly with my passion for giving back and creating meaningful change.
One aspect I am particularly excited about is the chance to reconnect dental students with their passion for community service which was so integral to our journeys into dental school. By providing diverse opportunities for engagement, whether through fundraisers or hands-on volunteer work, I aim to continue that dedication to serving others.
How will participating in ASDA make you a better student and a better dentist?
Participating in ASDA leadership will contribute to my growth as a student and a future dentist. Dentistry is a field that heavily relies on collaboration and teamwork, and by engaging in ASDA leadership, I will have the opportunity to develop and refine these essential skills further. Working alongside fellow members will strengthen my ability to communicate effectively and work cohesively within a team setting – all of which are crucial for success in the dental profession. Moreover, taking on the role of community outreach chair will challenge me to think creatively and strategically to fulfill my responsibilities. This experience will not only enhance my problem-solving abilities but also help me improve my time management skills. Balancing my leadership duties with my academic commitments will require me to prioritize tasks and manage my time efficiently. The experience will make me a better student and a more well-rounded future dental professional.
