Changing lives and restoring smiles

Neil Lelm will never forget his first patient as a dental student at the School of Dentistry. He worked with a team of fellow classmates to create a set of dentures for a patient.

“When we finished, she told us that the real test for the quality of her dentures would be when she was yelling at the referees at local basketball games,” he said.

That moment encapsulated what it means to be a dentist for Lelm: “Each time I have a laugh with a patient or see them smile after they get their teeth fixed, it is another reminder of why I chose to pursue a career in dentistry,” he said. “We really do change people’s lives.”

Changing lives is an essential part of Lelm’s every day in the clinics, and he sees the way has been able to grow as a provider and make an impact as a student at the School of Dentistry.

“The goal of school is learning how to provide excellent care to our patients,” Lelm explained. Through his pre-clinical and clinical experience, Lelm has felt the support and wisdom of his faculty and his fellow students each day. “I have learned skills that not only make the work easier for me, but provide a better outcome for my patients, as well,” he explained. “I am confident that the school has prepared me to provide excellent care to my patients in the future.”

In addition to excellent in-clinic care, Lelm has embraced the Senior Outreach program and its ability to help him change lives. “There are so many people that do not have easy access to care,” he explained. “What better way to reach out to those in need than to have students head out to rural Minnesota and help out? The outreach program is an experience that you will not get anywhere else.”

The journey toward being an excellent clinician has not always been easy for Lelm. “Dental school is not easy,” he said. “But it is worth it.” And the support of his faculty and classmates has made each step of the journey worth it.

“Everyone at the School of Dentistry is willing to share their experiences and prepare you for the next step. If you are willing to reach out and get to know your instructors, they will provide you with a wealth of knowledge. I chose this school knowing that I would have support every step of the way, and that is what I have received.”
