Description
Learn How To
- Identify the medical history and medical emergency concerns related to the use of nitrous oxide sedation
- Provide nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation sedation effectively and safely for children and adults
- Titrate levels of nitrous oxide administration according to individual patient needs
- Document the use of nitrous oxide sedation in the patient record
- Use and maintain nitrous oxide equipment
- Prevent occupational hazards associated with nitrous oxide sedation

- Pregnant women are not eligible to participate in this course.
- You will receive access to a Google drive team folder & links via email. This virtual folder will contain your course videos, case studies, and assignments.
Training Methods
Pre-course self-study reading assignments, illustrated video presentations, case studies and assignments. Onsite training includes demonstration, hands-on exercises and discussion.
Audience
Open to dentists*, dental therapists, dental hygienists, and licensed dental assistants.
*Training provided to dentists during these programs is considered an update. Courses provide a review of the subject and an introduction to recent advances in the field.
To be eligible for enrollment, dentists must have completed previous competency training (equivalent, at a minimum, to the course contents) and possess current experience.

September 30, 2026 - November 14, 2026
Step 1: Four-hour Pre-reading Assignment
Your course tuition includes the text Handbook of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation by Morris S. Clark and Ann L. Brunick. You will receive the textbook prior to the start of class on September 30, 2026. Please set aside four hours to read the required text before November 13, 2026.
Step 2: Three-hour Video Presentations
Your course includes three hours of video presentations by the University of Minnesota faculty. You will receive access to the videos on September 30, 2026.
Step 3: Two-hour Case Study Assignments
Your course includes two hours of case studies and open-book assignments. You will receive access to the case assignments on September 30, 2026. Please set aside two hours to read through the case studies and complete the assignments before November 13, 2026.

Step 4: Three-hour Onsite Clinical Training
Your course includes three hours of clinical orientation, supervised administration, and a review of each administration. Your clinical session consists of administering at least three individual analgesia cases and supervised clinical experience using fail-safe anesthesia equipment capable of positive pressure respiration.
